Support DISCLOSE Act
By David Akey, Letter to the Editor
On Aug. 20, AB 1648, the California DISCLOSE Act was passed
in the state Assembly. This act stops special interests
like super PACs from hiding the funders of their ads. The
top three funders must have their logos plainly visible in
the ad. The intent is for voters to know who's behind TV
and other media ads, regardless of special interest groups
behind them, e.g., corporations or labor unions.
The DISCLOSE Act, aka the "clean money" act, has 90,000
endorsements at this time including many cities, civic
groups, League of Women Voters and citizens. The San Luis
Obispo City Council has endorsed it. It is working in the
states of Arizona and Maine and is being considered in
several other states.
The DISCLOSE/Clean Money Act needs your help. To stay
alive, it must pass the state Senate by a majority vote by
Friday! Please support this act by contacting state Sen.
Sam Blakeslee: State Capitol, Room 4066, Sacramento, CA
95814-4900; 916-651-4015, and request his yes vote on AB
1648. If it passes the California senate, then it will
appear on the general election ballot in 2014.
