Editor -- Thanks to The Chronicle for supporting the Clean Money and Fair Elections Act, under consideration by the state Senate after approval by the Assembly last week. This is the bill that would create public financing for elections. This bill gives those who have lost hope in politics the opportunity to change a system that requires politicians to give special consideration to those with enough money to fund a campaign. In states with public financing, candidates need not hold fundraisers, or talk to lobbyists, and they are accountable only to the voters who elected them. Winning candidates are no longer those with the most money and more women and minority candidates enter political races. The money necessary to fund this program would be only a tiny percentage of the state budget. The benefits would be profound. Visit www.caclean.org for more information.
