Support Proposition 89

By Suzette Welch, Letter to the Editor

Proposition 89 will enable candidates for state office to choose to receive public funding for their campaigns and restrict contributions for state ballot measures. The fund money will come from a 0.2 percent increase in the corporation tax rate. This increase would restore the corporate tax rate to the 1996 level.

The funding from 89 would enable more candidates to get involved in the political process and give voters more choices. It will take the corporation and special-interest money out of the political process.

You might think that decreasing the power and influence of large corporations in the political process sounds good but will never happen. It can happen and is now in place and working in Arizona and Maine.

The California Nurses Association has sponsored this measure because taking the special-interest money out of politics will make it possible to fix our broken health care system, clean up our environment and create a government that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.

Join the nurses on Nov. 7 and vote yes on Prop. 89.
